I didn\u2019t feel very well (physically) over the weekend, and slept really poorly. <\/span>I woke up Monday morning with the alarm, feeling VERY sleep deprived and nauseous. <\/span>I made the decision to take care of me, and slept in until 8:30. <\/span>FINALLY caught up on sleep. <\/span>Showed up at the gym at time I\u2019m usually leaving, and still gave myself an hour, including a great yoga workout. <\/span>Ahhh!<\/p>\n

So, I arrived at my desk starting to feel rested and human again, but\u2026 but then realized that my self-care had put me several hours behind on my plans for the day. <\/span>As I started to dig into my goals for the day, I felt my mood slipping into darkness. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWait a minute! I thought. <\/span>\u201cwhat about all that crap you spout about \u2018choosing your attitude,\u2019 Jim?!\u201d <\/span>Hmm. Just thinking about it was not enough, however. <\/span>I needed something more than sheer force of will <\/span>to help me shift my mood. <\/span><\/p>\n

So I opened up iTunes, clicked on my High Energy playlist, and chose Randomize. <\/span>The first three songs to pop up: <\/span><\/p>\n

Susan Boyle singing I Dreamed a Dream<\/em>. <\/span>Not a bad start. <\/span>I felt inspired.<\/p>\n

Next up was Adam Lambert\u2019s wickedly delicious I\u2019m Here For Your Entertainment<\/em>. <\/span> <\/span>For all the controversy over his TV appearance, this is a fabulously upbeat song with a great beat. <\/span>And I\u2019ve found that if you let go of finding sexual overtones in the words, it can also be a great song about coaching, as in the refrain:<\/p>\n

No escaping when I start
\nOnce I\u2019m in I own your heart
\nThere\u2019s no way to ring the alarm
\nSo hold on until it\u2019s over
\nOh!
\nDo you know what you got into
\nCan you handle what I\u2019m \u2019bout to do

\nI bet you thought that I was soft and sweet
\nYou thought an angel swept you off your feet
\nBut I\u2019m about to turn up the heat
\nI\u2019m here For Your Entertainment<\/em><\/p>\n

Can you see the coaching link? <\/span>Well, maybe not the entertainment part so much, but more the ‘hold on’ and ‘it’s about to get rough for you.’\u00a0 I tell clients up front that there will be moments of discomfort. <\/span>And it is a coach’s job is to turn up the heat sometimes, yes?! <\/span><grin><\/p>\n

Then up came Brian Eno & John Cale singing Spinning Away<\/em>, that lovely upbeat tune that I downloaded on the recommendation of a friend (at this point that I felt gratitude).\u00a0 That was it. <\/span>I simply HAD to get up and dance around my office!<\/p>\n

Then, best of all, the Andrews Sisters\u2019 high-flyin\u2019 rendition of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.<\/em> <\/span>Woohoo! <\/span>When I hear this song, my feet actually move themselves! <\/span><\/p>\n

Mood shift accomplished. <\/span>Here\u2019s to the power of music. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Next time you’re stuck in a mood that’s not working for you, try listening to some music that you love… and notice what happens!<\/p>\n
