{"id":1514,"date":"2010-09-19T20:40:06","date_gmt":"2010-09-20T00:40:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lifewithhappiness.com\/?p=1514"},"modified":"2018-10-02T13:36:51","modified_gmt":"2018-10-02T17:36:51","slug":"smile-like-a-baby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theexecutivehappinesscoach.com\/2010\/09\/smile-like-a-baby\/","title":{"rendered":"Smile Like a Baby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As of the moment I\u2019m writing this, our first grandbaby\u2019s due date has come\u2026 and gone.<\/strong> And my daughter is still (very) pregnant.\u00a0 In fact, she and Paul attended the out-of-town wedding for Kelly\u2019s med-school roommate <em>on <\/em>her due date.\u00a0 Until the baby arrives, life remains normal\u2026.<br \/>\n<strong>Babies d<\/strong><strong>on\u2019t pay much attention to deadlines and schedules, do they?<\/strong> Yet they hold a great deal of wisdom about life.\u00a0 A couple months ago we saw the documentary, <em>Babies<\/em>, at the movie theater, and were struck by how much babies smile.\u00a0 A lot.\u00a0 From very early on.<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theexecutivehappinesscoach.com\/files\/2010\/09\/babies.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1520\" title=\"babies\" src=\"https:\/\/theexecutivehappinesscoach.com\/files\/2010\/09\/babies-300x114.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And then I think about all the adults I work with, and how I actually TEACH the concept of smiling. <\/strong>Smiling appears to be a universal response \u2013 regardless of culture, language, social status, or environment, babies naturally smile.\u00a0 They \u201cget\u201d that a smile is a way to create a positive response in other people.\u00a0 Smiles attract positive attention.\u00a0 Smiles get them hugs and kisses.\u00a0 Smiles change the people around them.<br \/>\n<strong>Babies are very wise, I assess. <\/strong>We all know the story after that.\u00a0 Sometime in childhood, children start to absorb the message that smiling all the time is not acceptable.\u00a0 And so this universally positive and natural behavior is slowly extinguished, until the adult emerges with a \u201cserious\u201d face as their normal expression.\u00a0 And they learn that WHEN they show up &#8212; in the right place at the right time, keeping to the schedule &#8212; is more important than HOW they show up.\u00a0 Then they must re-learn how to use smiles as a tool to change the environment.<br \/>\nWhenever this baby arrives, I\u2019m looking forward to \u201cre-learning\u201d the natural ability to be happy\u2026and once again enjoy letting go of the need to stay on schedule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As of the moment I\u2019m writing this, our first grandbaby\u2019s due date has come\u2026 and gone.
