THE GIFT OF GREAT EMPLOYEES<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Recently, one of my clients was stunned by the resignation of a star employee <\/strong>— a woman he\u2019d been developing for an executive role, possibly even as his successor.\u00a0 He told me he was meeting with her in a few hours to discuss what he might do to keep her.\u00a0 Then he shared, \u201cI\u2019m going to let her know that she was being groomed for a top leadership spot.\u201d
\n\u201cYou mean to say,\u201d I asked, \u201cthat you\u2019d never told her she was on your high-potential list?\u201d <\/strong>Apparently that discussion had never taken place.
\nThis is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that I climb onto a soapbox and repeat this message: Tell your people \u2013 ESPECIALLY your best talent \u2013 how much you love them!<\/strong>
\nDo you remember how much time and attention you lavished on your best and brightest hires when they came on board? <\/strong>How you carved out time to meet with them during orientation, and rearranged your schedule to spend time in training and nurturing the relationship up front?\u00a0 And then what?\u00a0 If you\u2019re like many managers, you got busy let your relationship with them shift to low-grade maintenance.
\nIn other words, there was a point when you started to take them for granted. <\/strong>Big mistake.\u00a0 While the economy may still suffer in many ways, the reality is that most talented people still have lots of options.<\/p>\n

Practice Annual Re-Recruitment
\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

Years ago I learned of the process called \u201cAnnual Re-recruitment\u201d — and I share it again<\/strong> in the hope that you might avoid having to engage one of your top high-potential people in the conversation of, \u201cwhat can you do to keep you?\u201d after they\u2019ve already given notice.
\nAnnual Re-recruitment is stunningly simple<\/strong>.\u00a0 All you need do is identify the top 15-25% of your people and sit down with each of them for a few-minute conversation**<\/strong><\/span>, in which you say, \u201cI\u2019m so glad you are here.\u00a0 I value your talent and your contribution, and I hope we are letting you know that often enough.\u00a0 I want you to be with us one year from now.\u00a0 What will it take for that to be true?\u201d<\/em> <\/span>Your own words may differ, but hopefully you get the idea.
\nDon\u2019t assume people know you value them, unless you tell them directly and often!<\/strong>
\nRemember: Leadership is not about a title<\/strong>.\u00a0 Anyone can be a leader who seeks to build enduring relationships with good people, and who makes it a priority to deliver positive feedback and give people the opportunity to learn and grow.
\n**<\/span><\/strong>And don\u2019t even think about saying, \u201cJim, I don\u2019t have the time.\u201d\u00a0 Because then I\u2019m going to ask you, \u201cOh, but you DO have the time to update the job description, interview multiple replacement candidates, set aside time for onboarding, and then repeat the training process all over again?\u201d\u00a0 Nuh, uh.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have the time to spend nurturing relationships with your best people, then something is awry, and to figure out what, just look in a mirror.\u00a0 If you call yourself a leader, then behave like one! <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
